Statement from ASIFA International It is with profound sadness that ASIFA International has informed of the passing of our dear Matea Milić in the beginning of August 2026. Matea was a remarkable producer, an inspiring collaborator, and a passionate advocate for the art of animation.

ASIFA International announces the 2026 International Animation Day Poster created by Japanese animator Yoriko Mizushiri. Many thanks and gratitude to ASIFA Japan and Hiroshi Onishi for facilitating this years project with IAD Director João Apolinário Mendes.

The ASIFA Student Award 2026 was awarded to “Susurros,” created by Alexandra Pewinski, Marie Lombard, Florian Reignier, Emma Pluchard, Lisa Francillon, and Alice Parmentier from Supinfocom Rubika. The film stood out for its compelling visual language and sensitive narrative approach, marking it as a notable achievement among this year’s entries.

Paul Grimault was born in Siene, France, on March 23rd, 1905. He was a pioneer of the French animation scene and began his career in the late 1920s as a furniture designer after studying applied arts.

Karel Zeman (1910–1989) stands among the most inventive figures in animation and fantasy filmmaking. Often called “the Czech Méliès,” he advanced the tradition of cinematic magic by fusing live action, puppetry, animation, and handmade effects.

Identical twins Stephen and Timothy Quay were born June 17th, 1947 in Norristown, Pennsylvania. After studying illustration at the Philadelphia College of Art, they moved to England in 1969 to attend the Royal College of Art in London and studied film while obtaining their master’s degrees.
